The traditional architecture feels authentic, enhancing the immersive experience. The shared onsen offers a unique way to unwind after a day of exploration.
Steep and slick stairs make navigating with luggage a challenge, especially for those with heavy bags. The shared bathroom situation could be inconvenient for some guests, adding to the discomfort when needing to go late at night.

I had a lovely stay at Chuokan Shimizuya Ryokan. The owners, Syotaru san and Katuyo san, were incredibly kind and welcoming. They even helped carry my luggage up the steep stairs, which was much appreciated. The Japanese-Style Single Room was spacious and had a cozy tatami mat. I really enjoyed the traditional breakfast prepared with care by Katuyo san. It felt like stepping back in time, maintaining the essence of a traditional ryokan. The shared onsen was a fantastic way to unwind after exploring Zenko-ji Temple, which is just a short walk away. However, the shared bathroom facilities felt a bit outdated, and the water was often cold while brushing my teeth. Private bathrooms would definitely enhance the experience. Despite these minor discomforts, the warm hospitality made my stay memorable. I’d highly recommend this ryokan for anyone looking for an authentic Japanese experience.

The ryokan has a charming atmosphere with traditional details.
The steep stairs were absolutely dangerous, especially when carrying luggage. I nearly lost my balance multiple times. Also, the shared onsen situation was awkward. there were no private options and cleanliness was a concern. Plus, the lack of personal touch in the service was disappointing despite the great environment.

My journey from doubt to delight
The accommodation was simply charming, and the hosts treated us like family. Their warmth and hospitality made our stay truly special, and we enjoyed the experience of mingling with locals in the vibrant area.
The stairs were quite steep and a bit slippery, causing some concern while navigating with luggage. Additionally, the thin walls allowed sounds from adjacent rooms, which could be distracting at times.

the ryokan had some charm, but the steep, slick stairs were a disaster. I almost fell multiple times. I also expected a personal welcome gift after all my messages went ignored, but I guess that’s simply ‘too much’ to ask. the breakfast was not included, which is such a disappointment for such a place.

If you're a seafood lover, you must dive into the grilled seafood nearby—an absolute treat! The couple running the joint are like your own Japanese grandparents, so welcoming! They even went above and beyond, allowing us late-night onsen access, which gave my tired bones just what they needed after days of exploring Zenko-ji and its stunning surroundings.
Plus, the onsen could've been a tad cleaner, but the charm of the place really shines through amidst these minor quirks.

The couple running this place is super attentive, making sure you feel at home right away,, they even cleaned my room during my stay! Plus, the onsen was great for relaxing after a day out,, you feel refreshed after that.
It wasn't the cheapest stay,, but honestly, worth every penny in terms of the experience.

A Magical Traditional Experience
I had an incredible time staying at this charming ryokan. The couple running the place were super welcoming and even remembered to prepare a thermos of hot water for us in the evening, which was such a thoughtful touch. The shared onsen was perfect after exploring the surrounding area, and our room was beautifully traditional with sliding paper doors. The location was ideal, just a stone's throw from Zenkoji Temple and plenty of cozy restaurants nearby. One small detail I'd suggest improving is the water temperature for brushing teeth, which could be a bit warmer.
